Take on one of Norway’s most challenging and rewarding hikes to the legendary Kjeragbolten — a massive boulder wedged in a cliff crevice nearly 1,000 metres above the Lysefjord. This is a demanding full-day adventure through raw mountain terrain, sheer cliffs, and some of the most dramatic fjord scenery in the world. With an experienced local guide and a small group of fellow adventurers, you will be in safe hands every step of the way.
Kjeragbolten — The Famous Boulder Wedged between two cliff walls high above the Lysefjord, Kjeragbolten is one of the most iconic and photographed natural features in Norway. The boulder was pushed into its position by a massive glacier approximately 50,000 years ago and has remained suspended there ever since. The brave can step out onto it for one of the most thrilling photo opportunities in Scandinavia — with a near-vertical drop of almost 1,000 metres beneath your feet.
Nesatindane Viewpoint Just a short detour from Kjeragbolten, Nesatindane offers panoramic views of the entire Lysefjord — from Lysebotn all the way to Preikestolen in the distance. On a clear day, the scale of the landscape is truly breathtaking. This is also one of the best vantage points to watch BASE jumpers launching from the opposite cliffs during summer.
Dramatic Fjord Views Throughout the Trail The Lysefjord stretches 42 km below, with sheer cliff walls rising over 1,000 metres on either side. As you gain altitude on the trail, the views open up progressively, rewarding every difficult ascent with increasingly spectacular scenery.
Chain-Assisted Steep Ascents The trail features three distinct steep climbing sections with iron chains bolted into the rock face to assist hikers. These challenging sections are part of what makes the Kjerag hike a true mountain experience — more of an alpine scramble than a regular hiking path.
Kjeragfossen Waterfall Just before reaching Kjeragbolten, a short detour reveals Kjeragfossen — a waterfall cascading hundreds of metres down the cliff face directly into the Lysefjord. A spectacular natural feature that is easy to miss without a knowledgeable guide.
Base Jumping Spectacle Kjerag is one of the world’s premier BASE jumping destinations. During summer months, it is not uncommon to watch jumpers leap from the cliff edges and freefall towards the fjord far below — a truly unforgettable sight from the plateau.
Mountain Plateau and Landscape Upon reaching the Kjerag plateau at over 1,000 metres above sea level, the terrain opens up into a vast, rugged highland with snow patches visible even in mid-summer. The contrast of smooth granite, mountain lakes, and the deep blue fjord far below creates a landscape unlike anything else in Norway.

Q: How difficult is the Kjerag hike compared to Preikestolen?
A: Kjerag is significantly more demanding than Preikestolen. The trail features three steep climbing sections with iron chains, a greater elevation gain, and longer overall distance. It is recommended for experienced hikers.
Q: Is it safe to step onto Kjeragbolten?
A: Yes, stepping onto the boulder is safe as long as you approach it carefully and respect the conditions. Your guide will assist you. We recommend avoiding it in wet or icy conditions as the rock surface can be slippery. To date, there have been no recorded accidents on the boulder itself.
Q: What are the chain sections like? A: There are three main steep sections where iron chains are bolted into the rock to assist hikers. These are mandatory sections of the trail — you will need to use your hands and upper body strength to pull yourself up and carefully descend. This is part of what makes the hike a genuine mountain experience.
Q: What if I am afraid of heights?
A: The trail involves exposed sections with significant drops. If you have a severe fear of heights, this tour may not be suitable for you. Please contact us before booking if you have any concerns.
Q: What is the weather like at Kjerag?
A: The Kjerag plateau is typically around 10 degrees colder than Stavanger, with stronger winds and unpredictable conditions. Snow can linger on the plateau until mid-June and return as early as late September. Warm and waterproof layers are essential regardless of the forecast.
Q: Are there any facilities on the trail?
A: There are no toilets or shops along the trail. There is a café and toilet facilities at the Kjerag parking area at the trailhead. Please use these before beginning the hike.
Q: Why does this tour alternate with the Trolltunga tour?
A: Both Kjerag and Trolltunga are full-day hikes requiring significant guide resources. By alternating on weekends, we are able to offer both experiences at the highest quality and safety standards throughout the season.
Q: How do I pay?
A: Full payment is required in advance at the time of booking.
Q: Can I upgrade to a private tour?
A: Yes, a private tour upgrade is available for groups who want an exclusive experience. Please contact us for pricing and availability.
