Discover Stavanger’s historic charm, colorful streets, and coastal culture on a guided city walk through its most iconic locations. Stavanger is Norway’s fourth-largest city and one of its oldest — a known settlement during the Viking Age — and this tour brings its fascinating stories to life on foot.
Gamle Stavanger (Old Town) Picturesque cobblestone streets lined with rows of wooden white houses, where nearly every home has a brightly painted and colorful front door. After World War II these houses were considered run-down and undesirable, but thanks to a conservation campaign led by architect Einar Heden, the city council voted to preserve the area in 1956, and many of the buildings have since been beautifully restored.
Øvre Holmegate (Fargegaten / The Color Street) Known to locals as Fargegaten, every home is painted a vibrant shade and the street is alive with tourists and visitors, with many shops, restaurants, and patios to enjoy.Often called Stavanger’s answer to London’s Notting Hill, it is one of the most colorful and photographed streets in all of Norway.
Stavanger Harbor & Torget (Main Square) Torget is a vibrant focal point in the heart of the city, sloping down from Stavanger Cathedral to the waterfront and offering a unique blend of art, commerce, and culture. The square is surrounded by bars and cafés with outdoor seating — an ideal spot to relax, enjoy a meal or a drink, and people-watch.
Stavanger Cathedral (Domkirke) Stavanger Cathedral is regarded as the oldest and best-preserved cathedral in Norway. Continuously used since the 1300s and retaining most of its original architecture, with only minor additions over the centuries — including a pulpit dating to 1650 and new stained glass added in 1957.
Valbergtårnet (The Valberg Tower) Valbergtårnet offers a different perspective of Stavanger from above and tells the story of the city’s guard and fire services in the 19th century. In the mid-1850s the tower was used by the city’s watchmen, who were posted to alert townspeople in case of fire.
Breiavatnet (City Lake) Breiavatnet is home to an abundance of swans, ducks, and other bird life, making it one of the best spots in Stavanger for a peaceful stroll. It sits right in the heart of the city, just steps from the cathedral and harbor.
Nuart Street Art Stavanger’s downtown area is home to a fascinating street art walk featuring massive murals as well as tiny works of art tucked into doorways and on buildings throughout the city. Your guide will point out the most iconic pieces along the route.
Antony Gormley Sculptures (“Rusty Men”) Scattered around the city are 23 bronze “rusty men” — sculptures by British artist Antony Gormley — hidden for visitors to discover as they walk. How many can you spot?
Fisketorget (Fish Market Area) The harbor fish market is the perfect place to do as the locals do — pick up freshly made fish cakes to go, or sit down for a meal at the waterfront restaurant. A true taste of Stavanger’s maritime soul.
